Each faculty member, either full-time or adjunct, is required to present a syllabus to the respective Associate Vice President’s office for each course offered by Central Virginia Community College. The syllabus needs to contain the following information:
Course title, number, prerequisites (if any), credit/contact hours, and course description
Instructor’s name, office room number, office telephone number, college e-mail address, and office hours as posted
Textbook(s) and or supplementary books and materials (Append a bibliography if needed)
Attendance policy and policy for missing assignments
Grading scale and procedures
Statements on safety where applicable
General course goals
Common student learning outcomes established for the course
A list of topics which will be covered during the course
A list of assignments students will be expected to complete during the course
The current ADA statement from the college
Student engagement (office) hours, including location, time, and modality.
AI Policy Statement* (see below)
As a suggestion, faculty members may also want to include a statement that dates in the syllabus are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

All faculty must include a clear class policy statement on the use or non-use of generative AI in the course syllabus. (Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence systems, such as ChatGPT or DALL·E, that can create text, images, code, or other content based on user input.) Three options are provided below; you are free to modify these to meet your own objectives and teaching methods, but you must include a clear policy statement.

AI tools can be utilized to supplement your understanding of course material, conduct research, and explore different perspectives. However, it is essential to exercise discernment and ensure that their usage aligns with academic integrity standards. Appropriately cite and reference any AI-produced content using the citation format specified in this syllabus. Embrace the opportunity to harness the power of Generative AI while maintaining honesty and intellectual growth throughout the course.
§ Notification 2: Conditional Generative AI Usage
In this course, the use of Generative AI is permissible only under specific circumstances outlined in assignment instructions. When AI tool usage is allowed, exercise caution and ensure that you appropriately cite and attribute any content generated through their use according to the citation guidelines provided in this syllabus. Striking a balance between leveraging AI resources and preserving your individual creativity and problem-solving abilities is essential. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in academic consequences as outlined in institutional policies. Pay careful attention to assignment requirements to determine whether AI tools are permitted.
§ Notification 3: No Generative AI Usage Permitted
Assignments in this course are designed to foster personal growth, critical thinking, and creativity. To uphold these goals, the use of Generative AI in assignments is strictly prohibited. Your individual effort and creativity are essential in demonstrating your understanding of the course material. Dependence on AI undermines these objectives and compromises the integrity of the learning process. Violations of this policy will result in academic consequences as described in institutional guidelines. We appreciate your commitment to academic honesty and encourage you to embrace opportunities for personal development by refraining from using Generative AI tools.
