In this class held in collaboration with Vector Space, a nonprofit Lynchburg Makerspace, students will learn and practice foundational techniques of blacksmithing to include:

  • History and modern day
  • Safety, tooling, and equipment
  • Heating metal and behavior under heat
  • Introduction to hammer and tongs (grip and posture)
  • Squaring, rounding, and tapering
  • Bending, isolating, and scrolling
  • Forge to finish


Students will forge something new during each class (wall hook/hanger, bottle opener, horse head bottle opener, leaves, and leaf hook). Students will select their final project that can be either a decorative coat rack, or leaves in a wooden vase.

*must be 18 years or older to participate
