Mural Requirements
- The final mural design must be dynamic, creating a sense of movement across the space. It should engage library visitors each time they visit. The mural should be able to be enjoyed for years to come and not be representative of a static point in time.
- The mural may only be applied on drywall; no other surfaces may be painted, such as baseboards, door frames, thermostats, room signage, etc. The mural is limited to paint (rolled or brushed) only; no other mediums may be used, such as vinyl applications, airbrushing, spray paint, etc.
The selected mural location is approximately 520 sq. ft. overall and is comprised of a total of 5 walls that are connected across one side of the library, as shown in the photos below. The mural will cover the wall spaces above the furniture.

Muralist Requirements
- Applicants may be individual artists or a team comprised of multiple artists.
- Applicants must have experience with designing and painting murals, as evidenced by application materials.
- Up to 3 applicants may be invited to prepare one preliminary design each, inspired by campus-generated design ideas, for final judging. More than one design may be submitted if desired. The invited applicants are also expected to meet in-person or via live video conference with the mural team (up to 12 members) for an interview and to present their preliminary design(s). The candidates who complete at least one preliminary design and the presentation/interview will be compensated with a $500 design fee upon completion of the design and interview process and CVCC’s receipt of a completed W-9.
- The selected muralist must be willing to work with the campus community throughout the painting process. The library will remain open throughout the process. The selected muralist must be amenable to having spectators at any given time.
- The selected muralist must understand that a final design requires multiple approvals, including at the Virginia Community College System level. A comprehensive list of all required materials must also be submitted for approval. It is also possible that a final design may not be agreed upon/approved and the project will end at the design stage. No justification for rejections is required of the sponsors.
- The selected muralist will be responsible for acquiring all necessary supplies once design, placement, and materials have received final approval. This includes supplies needed for painting, taping/draping, wall prep, cleaning, etc. Receipts are required for reimbursement. Reimbursement for supplies and materials may be issued once all items are acquired at the beginning of the painting phase and receipts for all items are received by CVCC.
- The selected muralist will be responsible for all prep work and cleaning. The CVCC Educational Foundation will purchase and provide a sealant that the muralist will be responsible for applying once the mural painting has been completed, and before project cleanup. CVCC Facilities will approve materials, protection measures, assist with furniture relocation as needed, and identify appropriate cleaning facilities.
- Final payment, less the $500 design fee and supplies/materials reimbursement, will be issued at the completion of the mural and project cleanup.
