Become a Teacher!

Teacher Licensure (Career Switcher Program)

Virginia's Community Colleges offer a fast track, alternative teacher licensure program - EducateVA. The program is a statewide initiative to address critical shortages in the teaching profession throughout the Commonwealth, allowing you to turn your dream of teaching into reality.

Teaching as a second career is as widespread throughout Virginia as our Career Switchers' backgrounds are diverse. We've assisted individuals from countless professions, including engineering, the medical field, manufacturing, sales, and industry to begin their new or second career in teaching. EducateVA can help you become a licensed teacher in the state of Virginia, while maintaining your current job and responsibilities!

The VCCS Career Switcher Program is certified by the Virginia Department of Education/Division of Teacher Education, Licensure, and Professional Practice. We use the same matrices and approved standards as all other approved teacher education programs in Virginia but we use a different pathway to accomplish that instruction at a fraction of the cost.

EducateVA is a program of the Virginia Community College System and is organized by the Community College Workforce Alliance. We have a proven track record and success in education, teaching, teacher education, teacher training, teaching careers, teaching jobs, teaching in Virginia, teaching as a second career, high school teaching requirements, education in Virginia, and becoming a teacher, so please contact us today for more information or to begin the process.

Teach Middle School or High School Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language (preK-12), English as a Second Language (preK-12), Health & Physical Education (preK-12) or a Career and Technical Education subject such as Business, Marketing, Technology Education or Family & Consumer Sciences. Please note: EducateVA does not offer training for an Elementary Education endorsement.

**Recent General Assembly legislation has resulted in the Workforce Credential Grant. Those funds, while available, will reduce the cost of tuition by 2/3 to $1,300.00 for program participants who successfully complete the training and obtain licensure.

The deadline for Fall 2018 is May 16, 2018. Applications will be accepted after April 16, 2018. Those sent prior to April 16, 2018 will be held, but not reviewed, until the application window has opened. Applicants will be notified by email of the next steps for paying the application fee after April 16, 2018.
