Frequently Asked Questions
How can the writing center help me?

Our tutors can help with academic papers at any stage of development in any subject or class.

This includes research presentations and papers, help with understanding an assignment, citations and references, proofreading, planning and outlining a paper, resumes and cover letters, and college admission essays.

What do I bring to my tutoring session?

Bring your assignment or syllabus, notes/outline/draft, ideas, a list of outside sources, and questions.

What can I expect at my tutoring session?

Our tutors will help you understand your assignment, help plan and outline your paper, and help with the structure and organization of your project.

We will review with you the rules of writing, grammar, and punctuation. We will guide you in properly paraphrasing content to avoid plagiarism, also.

We will help you to properly cite and format in-text citations and create a works cited or references page.

Our tutors, however, will not write or rewrite your paper for you or guarantee any outcomes or grades.

What if I am already a good writer?

It's always a good idea to have another perspective. Our tutors will review your paper to help catch any errors.

How can I make a tutoring appointment?

Call 434.832.7628 or stop by 3201 to set up an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome as schedules permit. The Writing Center is located in Bedford Hall, above the library.
