What is Verification?

Verification is a federally instituted process to confirm the information provided on the FAFSA.  Selection for this process is done randomly by the U.S. Department of Education.  Approximately 30% of all FAFSA applications are flagged for verification.

How do you know if you’ve been selected for Verification?

If your ‘To Dos' list has items listed, you have been selected for verification. You MUST turn in all items listed to the CVCC Financial Aid Office BEFORE your FAFSA application can be successfully processed.

Where are the Verification forms listed?

If you are required to verify tax information, can you submit the 1040 you filed?

No. We cannot accept a copy of a 1040 tax return form for the verification process. To verify your tax return, you MUST submit an IRS Tax Return Transcript. You can obtain this transcript by contacting the IRS at 800-908-9946 or through www.irs.gov. You can also get a copy of the IRS Tax Return Transcript at the local IRS office located at 1101 Court Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504 (phone 434-528-1890).

What items are required for verification?

Household Size, Number Enrolled in College, Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), U.S. Income Tax Paid, Certain Untaxed Income/Benefits (Social Security Benefits), Child Support, IRA/Keogh Deductions, Foreign Income Exclusion, Earned Income Credit, Interest on Tax Free Bonds, etc.

How will the Financial Aid Office contact you?

All correspondence from the Financial Aid Office will be sent to your CVCC student email account (you are encouraged to check it daily).
