History Day is scheduled for March 30, 2019

History Day is a history competition for students in grades six through twelve. It is conducted at district and state levels in conjunction with the National History Day program. The first round of competition is held in the eight Districts of Virginia. CVCC is the host institution for District One, which includes the following areas: Amherst, Bedford, Campbell, Appomattox, Buckingham, Prince Edward, Cumberland, Powhatan, and Lynchburg.

Students in grades six through eight (6-8) are assigned to the junior division, students in grades nine through twelve (9-12) are assigned to the senior division. In each division, students may compete in any one of nine categories (groups may include 2 to 5 students):

  • Individual Documentary
  • Group Documentary
  • Individual Exhibit
  • Group Exhibit
  • Individual Historical Paper
  • Individual Performance
  • Group Performance
  • Individual Website
  • Group Website

The two best entries in each category, and in each age division, at the District competition qualify for the State contest. The two best entries in each category, and in each age division, qualify for the state competition.

 

To apply for District 1 History Day. please go to https://va-vadc.nhd.org and follow these instructions:
Teachers must register before their students.
  1. To register, teachers must first visit the District 1 Contest site.
    Click "Create Account" and select "Teacher." After completing the registration process, please remember your username and password so you will be able to login to the site on your next visit. If your students advance to the state or national contest, you will use the same login information for the state contest registration site and you will not create a new account.
     
  2. Students will also need to visit the District 1 Contest site.
    Click "Create Account" and select "Student." Students will input the title of their project, category, and other pertinent information including a parent's name and email address. Parents or guardians should be present to sign off on the permissions. For group projects, the first group member to register will need to share the group code with other members so that the students are linked by their project. Research papers can be uploaded (or reuploaded with edits) through the registration site up until the deadline for paper submission. NHD Weebly website addresses need to be entered into the registration site but then will automatically update as students update their websites through the Weebly platform. Names and project titles will appear in printed materials as they are entered by the students, so double-check for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. These may be changed within the registration system up until the registration deadline. Students will also need to remember their username and password to login again, make edits, or upload research papers. If students advance to the state or national contest, they will use the same login information for the state contest registration site and you will not create a new account.
