Curriculum Title and Type of award:  Respiratory Therapy Technology, Associate of Applied Science Degree in Respiratory Therapy Technology

Normal length of the curriculum:  Four-semester (two-year) plus one summer curriculum

Purpose and Curricular Objectives: 

The purpose of this curriculum is to prepare selected students for employment as Respiratory Therapists and for Registry by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Objectives CVCC Respiratory Therapy Technology:

  1. To prepare graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs).
  2. To provide graduates with professional role models consistent with the “Code of Ethics” of the American Association of Respiratory Care.
  3. To provide the community with responsible respiratory therapy therapists who interact appropriately with the changing health care system.

Individuals are eligible for admission to CVCC if they are high school graduates or the equivalent, or if they are eighteen years of age or older and able to benefit academically from study at the community college, as demonstrated by assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Special program or graduation requirements:  

Program Requirements:  Clinical experience in Respiratory Care Departments of selected health care facilities is provided and field trips are used to supplement learning in selected areas. The student will be expected to purchase uniforms and provide transportation to health care facilities and field trips at personal expense. Scheduled field trips include, but are not limited to, Duke University Hospital and Respiratory Society meetings. Students admitted to the program must complete a health record form and obtain up-to-date immunizations. Students will be required to obtain a Hepatitis B vaccine. A tuberculin screening skin test and a flu vaccination are required annually. Accepted students will be required to sign a liability waiver form prior to beginning the program.

Respiratory Therapy Technology Program Standards: Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in all Allied Health professional and core science courses (Anatomy and Physiology). Students earning less than a ‘C’ in Allied Health professional courses must repeat the course in the sequence in which they are offered. If at any time the Program Head believes a student should not continue in the program, a Review Committee shall be convened to review the student’s status. Students may waive the review process by submitting a letter to the Program head indicating a desire to withdraw from the program.
