If you know someone who has been sexually assaulted, you can help. If you have experienced sexual assault, whether it was recently or in the past, remember that you are not alone. There are people who can be a resource through your process of healing and recovery. Please call on us. Statistics vary on how many people are affected by sexual assault. In reality, sexual assault affects everyone, whether directly or indirectly. In a recent study conducted through the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, it was concluded that, in Virginia, one in four women and one in eight men have been sexually abused at some point in their lives.
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a Registered Nurse who has received special training so he/she can provide comprehensive care to sexual assault victims. He/she is able to conduct a forensic exam and may provide expert testimony if a case goes to trial. These exams are known as a Physical Evidence Record Kit (PERK).
