CVCC Announces Virtual Graduation Commencement Programs

LYNCHBURG, VA – Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) officials have announced a plan to produce two virtual graduation ceremonies during the month of May.  One is for the college’s Class of 2020 graduates and the second will be for this year’s Class of 2021 graduates.

CVCC College Registrar, Karen Alexander explained, “We never stopped working on options for celebrating our 2020 grads since we had to postpone last year’s ceremony due to COVID-19.  We are now happy to announce that we will produce virtual graduation ceremonies and celebration experiences for both our 2020 and 2021 graduates.  This will be a new format for us, but we think it will be very special and will safely accommodate our students and their families.  Unfortunately, we are not yet at a time where a face-to-face ceremony can be held, so we are working to develop other celebratory events to honor and recognize our outstanding graduates.”

CVCC has been closely monitoring all federal and state guidelines and weighing options for the best way to celebrate its graduates with the health and safety of students, staff, and faculty being first and foremost in the decision-making process.

To honor the Class of 2020, CVCC will be conducting a formal virtual graduation ceremony on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, for all graduates who completed their degrees, certificates, diplomas, and industry credentials at CVCC between Fall 2019 and Summer 2020.  In 2020, CVCC conferred 1,349 associate degrees, certificates, diplomas, career studies certificates, and workforce credentials to 929 graduates.

For the CVCC Class of 2021, the college will be conducting a similar virtual graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 13, 2021, for all graduates who either complete their degrees, certificates, diplomas, and industry credentials in the Fall of 2020, or are candidates for graduation in Spring 2021 or Summer 2021.  This year, CVCC anticipates awarding 1,062 associate degrees, certificates, diplomas, career studies certificates, and workforce credentials to 714 graduates.

To mark both occasions, the college will provide a suite of virtual experiences to recognize and celebrate graduates in an online Internet format.  In addition to streaming a formal pre-recorded ceremony featuring CVCC administrators, college deans and faculty, there will also be custom social media filters for graduates to post on their own social media pages.  Plus, a digital celebratory wall for congratulatory messages and access to an online tool through which graduates can upload their photo and information ahead of time for inclusion in the virtual ceremony.

Both 2020 and 2021 CVCC graduates will soon be receiving messages via email and texts informing them of the events and providing graduates with links for additional ways to participate and customize their CVCC graduation experience.
