Internet Connectivity Solutions for CVCC Students

LYNCHBURG, VA – In order to assist Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) students who are having Internet service connectivity and computer hardware issues, the CVCC Library and IT department have some new services and programs to help students.
These new services and programs include:

  • Free and open Wi-Fi zones in some of the main campus CVCC parking lots and the parking lots at the Bedford Center and Appomattox Center

  • A limited number of loaner laptops

  • And new this semester, also loaner T-Mobile hotspot devices with 5-month usage and unlimited data

Enrolled CVCC students can receive both a loaner laptop and hotspot devices if needed.
The free and open Wi-Fi zones are setup in CVCC parking lots 4, 6, and 7, near Bedford and Amherst halls, and the CVCC Bookstore. A map can found on this webpage: Free and open Wi-Fi zones are also setup in the Bedford Center and Appomattox Center parking lots. 
CVCC Vice President of Information Technology, Mr. David Lightfoot said, “The pandemic has clearly illustrated that Internet access is essential, yet many of our students and others in our community don’t have Internet access. This is a means to allow them high-speed Internet access from the safety of their vehicle.” 
Although the college buildings are closed, students will be allowed to sit in their cars and use the free Wi-Fi connections as needed during normal business hours and also for any remote learning class-time in the day or evening.
In addition to the free and open parking lot Wi-Fi zones, CVCC will also be supplying free loaner laptops or free loaner T-Mobile hotspot devices to qualifying students.  There are a limited in number of devices and CVCC staff will be distributing computers and hot spots to enrolled students on a first-come, first-served basis.
The following conditions need to be met to qualify for either a free loaner laptop or a free loaner hotspot device:

  • Students need to be enrolled for at least 6 class credits for CVCC spring semester 2021.

  • Students must fill out the online request form for either a loaner laptop or a loaner hotspot. Links to the forms can be found at:

  • The library staff will verify the student’s information and then contact the student when the loaner laptop or hotspot is ready and set up a day and time for pick up.

  • The student will keep the loaner laptop or the loaner hotspot for the entire spring semester but must return it by the end of final exams in May, 2021.
