Press Release - 11/03/2017

LYNCHBURG, VA – Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) announced that Dr. James L. Lemons will head the CVCC Workforce Division as Associate Vice President of Workforce, Business and Allied Health at the college.  Dr. Lemons has a long association with the college and was serving as Dean of the Business and Allied Health Division before taking on this new role.

“My goal is to eliminate the artificial distinctions that often exist between credit and non-credit programs.  I want the student to be in a position to make an informed decision regarding which program of study best meets their needs.  Right now, too many students do not get that opportunity due to our organizational structure.  I hope that I can create a One Door approach by merging both of these areas of the college and better serving our student’s needs,” explained Lemons.

Dr. Lemons began his association with CVCC as Coordinator of Workforce Development from November, 2004 until December, 2007.  Following that, he served as Dean of Business and Allied Health until May 2017, when he started his newest role as Associate Vice President of Workforce, Business and Allied Health at the college.

Prior to his work at CVCC, Lemons was President of the Center for Applied Textile Technology in the North Carolina Community College System.  In addition, he has served on the faculty at UNC – Charlotte, Virginia Tech, and N.C. State University.  He is a graduate of the Community College Presidents Executive Program at UNC Chapel Hill, the Non-Profit Management Program at Duke University and the Workforce Development certification program at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Lemons has also earned a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, an MBA from Virginia Tech, and an M.Ed and a B.S. from N.C. State.

His service to educational boards includes terms on the Advisory Board for the R.B. Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, the Advisory Board for the Centra College of Nursing, and the Advisory Board for the Physician Assistant Program at Lynchburg College.

Dr. John Capps, President of CVCC commented, “With a rich background in academic administration and workforce development, Jim is the perfect person to integrate our credit and non-credit programs. His leadership will be the key to the success of this new approach to providing employers and employees with credentials that matter.”
