CVCC Professor Wins Outstanding Faculty Award - 12/12/19

LYNCHBURG, VA – Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) professor Dr. Cynthia Deutsch, professor of psychology, has been recognized as one of the 2020 Outstanding Faculty Award winners by Virginia’s State Council of Higher Education (SHEV) and Dominion Energy.

CVCC President Dr. John Capps remarked, “The SCHEV 2020 Outstanding Faculty Award is the highest honor that the state of Virginia bestows upon higher education faculty, and it therefore confirms what we already knew: Cynthia is indeed the best of the best—the best we can be!”

Regarding the honor, Dr. Deutsch stated, “I am thankful every day for the opportunity to work with students and to help them in the ways that my professors touched me throughout my journey.  My work, however, doesn’t occur in a vacuum, and I know it is the people around me that have allowed me to grow and have such an amazing career, from the UVA students and children at Camp Kesem to all of my friends and colleagues at CVCC.  I am deeply grateful to CVCC and the VCCS for the many opportunities that have allowed me to flourish and to SCHEV for the recognition of my work.”

Since 1987, this award has recognized faculty at Virginia’s institutions of higher learning who exemplify the highest standards of teaching, scholarship and service. Nominees are selected by the institutions, reviewed by a panel of peers and chosen by a committee of leaders from the public and private sectors. In all, 85 nominations were submitted this year. This group was narrowed to a field of 27 finalists and then to the 12 recipients, including Cynthia Deutsch.

Dr. Deutsch has been teaching psychology for CVCC since 2001.  She has served as the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) co-director and is currently the CVCC Faculty Association President.  She also serves as the treasurer for the Virginia Social Science Association and is on the editorial review board for the journal Current Psychology.  Privately, she has volunteered with Camp Kesem UVA, part of a national community that supports children through and beyond their parent’s cancer treatment, and still serves on their advisory board.

In addition to her many awards and recognitions, Dr. Deutsch, has established an outstanding record of teaching and service with a strong reputation for student connection. Having taught more than 6,000 students across her 18 years as an educator, Cynthia strives for excellence in her work with students from a variety of backgrounds. She is described by students as a zealous educator with a gentle but enthusiastic desire to share her knowledge and love of psychology with her students.

Dr. Deutsch has also been awarded the Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship in 2010, an award that is designed to support faculty to prepare them for top-level management and instructional positions within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).  Furthermore, she has been the recipient of the Learning Environment Award from students several times and was the recipient of the Faculty Leadership Award twice at CVCC. In 2019, Cynthia had the tremendous honor of receiving the Susan S. Wood Professorship for Teaching Excellence Award from the VCCS.

Each of the Outstanding Faculty Award winners will receive their SHEV award along with a $7,500 gift from Dominion Energy at a special ceremony in Richmond on March 9, 2020.
